Powder & Steel

Wiki

A field guide to Catalonia in 1690: the towns, the factions, the weapons and the goods. Numbers come straight from the current build. No story spoilers.

How it plays

The rules of the road, the market and the fight.

Real-time with pause

Battles run in real time, and you can stop the clock at any moment to give orders. Alvaro strikes when he is ready; every weapon has its own rhythm.

Reach

A blade reaches one step. Pikes, partisans and halberds reach two. Firearms reach across the field, but a reload costs time you may not have.

Armor against weapons

Armor holds some blows better than others. Quilting stops cuts, plate stops blades and spent balls, a musket at close range goes through almost anything.

Stances

Standing, kneeling, lying down. A man on his knee is harder to hit and steadier with a gun, but slow to move.

Companions

Hire up to five fighters in town taverns. They draw wages for every hour on the road, fight on their own, and leave if you stop paying.

Trade

Merchants want their cut both ways: you buy above the going price and sell below it. Hauling goods back and forth for no reason loses money. Profit comes from long runs, from a town that makes something to a town that badly needs it, and from events. Tavern rumors name the town and the trouble, never the goods, and some rumors are old or simply wrong.

Gathering

Ore and charcoal in the Manresa pits, dead trees in the ravine, turnips in the garden. Take the right tool in hand (a pickaxe, an axe or a spade in the weapon slot) and work: each portion takes an hour and gives a little. The spot runs out and grows back in a few days, and the tool wears down. Raw goods sell cheap; the money is in smelting and forging.

The wagon

What you can carry decides what you can earn. Upgrade the wagon and the horses, and keep the wheels repaired.

The forge

Buy blueprints, study them, and forge weapons, armor and goods. Every piece of gear takes charcoal, and bullets, shot and cartridges are cast from lead. Working in your grandfather's workshop is free; a town smith charges for his hearth.

Herbs and remedies

Herbs grow in ravines and town gardens; arnica and gentian only in the mountains, mandrake rarely anywhere. Picked bushes grow back in three days to a week, mandrake in a month. Four simple remedies are known from the start; the rest come from recipe sheets sold by apothecaries. Healing remedies work from your belt in a fight, and some tinctures raise Strength, Agility, Wits or, rarely, Luck for a few hours.

Character

Four attributes, five skills and traits chosen at the start. Perks come every few levels.

Reputation

Four factions keep track of you. Their favor opens doors and closes others.

Streets and houses

Manresa, Vic and Girona follow the real plans of their old towns, at real scale. Nobody numbered houses in 1690 and there were no street signs: you learn a street from the saint in the niche on its corner, and people go by the owner's name. Look at a house and its street and number go on the district map (M). Press N on the map to see every number at once.

Notice boards

Every town square has a board. Notices change with the days: news, advice, jobs and the odd strange note. Some only hang on market day. Take a job notice and you'll know whom to ask.

Inside a house

Step into a house and the roof comes off, the way it did in Fallout: the back walls stay up to room height and the front walls drop to the knee. If a house hides Alvaro from view, only a small see-through window opens around him.

Doors and keys

Doors open with a click, and doors between rooms are never locked. Some front doors are: the key lies in another house's stash, and looking at the door tells you which. You can also pick the lock, but if someone sees you, the town remembers it and a guard comes running.

Towns

Eleven towns of Catalonia. Each makes some goods cheaply and pays well for others.

  • Barcelona

The capital and the port: ships from Genoa and Naples, the viceroy's court and the crowd on the Rambla. Shipyard, arena and the busiest market in the land.

    Makes
    Turnips, Carrots
    Needs
    Gunpowder, Cloth

Factions

Every faction remembers what you did for it. Help one, and its enemies like you less.

The Crown

The viceroy in Barcelona, the town governors, garrisons and customs. Power that writes papers and takes tolls, and wants to know whose goods are on the road.

The Inquisition

The tribunal of Barcelona and its commissioners at the cathedrals. It watches not your cargo but what you say, and trusts an informer faster than a document.

The Garduña

A brotherhood that settles matters faster than a court, and worse. Hired hands across Catalonia who remember who spoke to them like a person.

The Comuneros

Neither bandits nor rebels: people who help their own where the law helps no one.

Weapons

Damage is a range per hit. Reach is in steps on the battlefield.
